The signs and symptoms of your changing hormones can
begin in your late 30’s, long before you might expect them.
Women have been conditioned to believe that menopause is something
to be approached with dread and fear. Moreover, most women don’t understand perimenopause (the years leading to actual menopause) and
are completely unprepared for it. It’s important to remember that menopause is not a disease, but rather a natural life transition experienced by every woman in the world in her own unique way.
Perimenopause can begin in your 30’s and span 5 - 15 years. As the end
of your child bearing years approach, progesterone levels begin to drop, disrupting the fine balance between this vital hormone and estrogen. The resulting excess of estrogen is often the cause of mood swings, heavy periods, tender breasts, fibroids, cysts and other symptoms known as "estrogen dominance."
Your changing hormones will impact your entire endocrine system, most noticeably the healthy function of your adrenals glands, thyroid, pancreas
and gut; the largest endocrine organ in the body. Women often don't associate the onset of symptoms as hormonal imbalances. They tend to
think something is terribly wrong and turn to their doctor for answers. Typically, that results in prescribed medications, including "the pill," antidepressants and/or synthetic hormone replacement therapy.
Many women also endure unnecessary hysterectomies and other surgical procedures, while the core cause of their symptoms are ignored and
left unaddressed. The heavy bleeding, fibroids, cysts and thickening of
the uterus that lead to a hysterecomy or cyst removal, are typically the
result of an excess estrogen, and could be resolved without the need
for an invasive surgical proceedure.
When a woman reaches menopause (12 months without a cycle), many
of the most challenging symptoms of "the change" are behind her. While
this phase of your journey might seem smoother with more manageable symptoms, new and deeper aspects of your changing hormones need to be addressed. Menopause brings your awareness to the “silent symptoms” of estrogen deficiency including bone loss and heart disease.
